Does God put us through pain and suffering so that we turn to him?

So i've called myself a catholic my whole life. I've went to church every sunday. but never really took any of it in. I have had doubts about God for a long time. I was in no way devout. I'm just wondering, i've went through alot of emotional....torment almost. Does God allow this so that we turn to him ? I know the devil is responsible for pain and suffering but does God allow it so we draw closer to him? If not, then why does he let bad things happen to good people? I know i'm going to get alot of atheists on here saying God doesn't exist. Just live and let live.
